1st Grade Curriculum Resources
Reading The Reading and Language program contains daily practice in activity phonics-word games, sight words, letter recognition, phonemic awareness and language mechanics accompanied by guided journal writing. Materials used include:

Math A hands-on approach to mathematics is used by exposing students to a wide variety of opportunities for developing awareness of mathematical concepts. This includes concrete learning using numerous types of manipulatives to help provide a solid foundation for the more abstract principles to follow. Classroom experiences include enumeration, inequalities, patterns, measurements, comparisons, data management and problem solving.

Social Studies In our studies, the student is recognized as being a member of the school, the local community and the larger world. (for example, classroom rules and government). Cross cultural awareness is fostered through the recognition of and participation in family festivals and traditions. A sense of history is developed through examination of family histories, records of local events, etc.

Science The focus of the science program is to help the child develop an understanding and respect for the world around them. Through observation of natural processes, discussion of phenomena and documentation of class activities, the child is encouraged to view science as an approachable and integral part of daily life.
